In Colorado Springs, there are several big events each year. One of the most spectacular is the Colorado Balloon Classic. When you are parked on the grass on the south side of Prospect Lake, you get the full breathtaking view, of a field full of almost cartoon like creatures rising into the dawn's pink light. As you catch the first bright rays of sunlight with a backdrop of majestic beauty, glowing around the magnificient mass of color, you are in awe of the site. "Top 100 Events in USA" sponsored by Event Media Network, has chosen this event three times as one of their best yearly events. Always held each year on Labor Day Weekend, in Memorial Park, in Colorado Springs, CO. It is a "free" event that attracts 1000's of people. The event has grown to over 100 hot-air balloons over the years. With the glorious scenery of Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Majestic Purple Glow on the horizon, the beauty of the Balloon Classic for pilots and spectators alike is extrordinary. Arriving before dawn and hanging out until dusk gives you the ultimate experience of both the hot-air balloons and the wonder and beauty of Colorado Springs. In order to get the most from the day, it is best to arrive around 5:30 A.M. Opening ceremonies and concessions always starts about 6 a.m. When you get there early, you get to see from the beginning, how the areonauts set up for their balloon extravaganza. Shortly after they lay out the massive balloons(some stand as tall as 10 stories), then, they start the fire that brings the creatures to life. As soon as the first bunch takes off and clears the way, the second barage of pilots sail off into the early morning sky. You've got a giant tree trunk with a toucan and a parrot riding along. You can't miss the Colorado State Flag sailing across the sky blue background. There is a giant smiling house with various animated characters on the side, and a kaleidoscope of multi-colored balloons. If you as so inclined, the view from Gold Camp Road on the Northwest side of Colorado Springs, approx. another 1000 ft above the whole city, is even more spectacular. As the sun climbs above the ridge of the Eastern Plains, this view feels like one of those pictures that don't seem to be real. It is hard to imagine the beauty before you. If you don't want to be in the crowd at Memorial Park, this is another exciting option and is ideal to capture those extemely unique photos and video from above. Or if you are brave, and have an inkling of adventuresome spirit, then go for an actual balloon ride. It is worth every penny. The adrenalin rush from being up to 1000 ft up, floating is second to none. It is always good to check out the website and check for requests of advance notice. It get's crowded sometimes. The Balloon Classic is going on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It promises to be an action packed day with non-stop concerts, all of the best concession foods are served and the souvenirs are abundant. The classic is also host to various programs each night after the magnificient Pike's Peak sunset, sponsored by Balloon Glo. Sky-diving is one of the favorites at the classic. The excitement of the show, keeps you on the edge of your blanket or lawn chair seat. The skydiver's are professional and well-trained to give you a heart attack several times during the course of the day. The schedule also includes numerous radio controlled model aircraft exhibitions and exciting aerobatic hang gliders. If you like to watch the ultra-lite aircraft, there will be several demonstrations and feats of acrobatic skill performed by those pilots. The balloons seem like balls of color floating on the crisp cool air. They bounce around the sky for hours on end. The whole day is full of excitement and fun. Not only is the Colorado Balloon Classic an exciting public event, but it raises lots of money for charities across the El Paso County area. In 2005 the Colorado Balloon Classic created a Literacy Program to support local schools. The Pikes Peak Library District designed a mascot, Captain Bookworm, that is sold each year since, at the event to benefit the district's literacy programs. The 2006 Classic resulted in over 1,000 books being donated to the students at Stratmoor Hills Elementary School. Each year a local charity is chosen by the organizers of the to support. Proceeds from the sale of tickets, and most of the concessions are donated to the charity of the year. The Colorado Balloon Classic grows by leaps and bounds each year. There are no other balloon festivals that compare with the beauty and fun of this wonderful, weekend long event. For more information and a schedule: http://www.balloonclassic.com |
