Penrose               envisioned               a               luxurious,               modern               resort               with               elaborate               details,               including               a               curved               marble               staircase,               chandeliers               an               hand               painted               beams               and               ceilings.

The               expert               of               the               90               year               old               resort               is               of               striking               pink               stucco.
               Visitors               traveled               to               Colorado               Springs               for               the               fresh               mountain               air,               said               d               to               relieve               symptoms               of               tuberculous.

               The               Cliff               House               at               Pikes               Peak
               The               Cliff               House               at               Pikes               Peak               is               on               the               outskirts               of               Colorado               Springs,               in               Manitou               Springs.

When               the               property               first               opened               in               1874,               it               served               as               a               boarding               house               and               stagecoach               stop.

Miners,               businessmen               and               health               enthusiasts               were               drawn               to               the               property               for               the               curative               mineral               springs               in               the               region.
               One               of               the               first               entrepreneurs               drawn               to               the               region               for               its               reputed               health               benefits               was               Edward               E.

Nichols,               who               was               stricken               with               tuberculosis.

He               beat               the               illness               and               relocated               to               Manitou               Springs,               where               he               served               as               mayor               for               eight               terms.

In               1886               he               purchased               the               inn               and               converted               it               to               a               sophisticated               resort               hotel,               capitalizing               on               the               sparkling               mineral               springs.
               In               1914,               the               Manitou               Bath               House               Company,               a               collaboration               of               Nichols               and               Colorado               Governor               Shoup,               was               opened.

The               bath               company               transformed               the               struggling               community               into               a               health               resort               offering               water               therapies.
               In               the               next               30               years,               Nichols               expanded               the               property               for               a               20               room               inn               into               a               300               room               resort               hotel.

In               1981               a               California               real               estate               developer               James               S.

Morley,               converting               the               historic               building               into               an               apartment               building.

Fire               damaged               the               building               in               1982,               causing               the               property               to               be               closed               down               for               16               years.

In               1997,               Morley               committed               to               a               restoring               The               Cliff               House               to               its               original               distinction.
               After               a               two               year               Restoration               that               cost               ten               million               dollars,               the               Cliff               House               at               Pikes               Peak               reopened.

The               inn               retained               its               historic               atmosphere,               while               offering               modern               amenities.
               Seventeen               celebrity               themed               suites               are               named               after               famous               guests               who               have               lodged               at               the               inn               during               its               130               year               history.
